Kangarooo Friendly Trelissing
Gwynnyth Vineyard nestles in a heavily-treed amphitheatre
and is a haven for many birds, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and, more recently, koalas .
While not an organic vineyard, it is run along sustainable lines.
The vines are trellised to a height of 2 meters, keeping them out of reach of the wallabies.
This not only results in dappled fruit exposure and good air flow, it also limits fungal disease and allows natural predators, such as ladybirds, to control caterpillar strikes.
As a result we require very few sprays.
The higher trellis also allows us to maintain a permanent soil cover throughout the vineyard, avoiding erosion, herbicide use, building up organic material and assisting water penetration.
